A fire started on the Hull side of the Ottawa River and it quickly spread across the river due to high winds, lumber stored in residential areas, large quantities of saw dust and homes were built out of wood.  90% of downtown Hull and Le Breton Flats were burnt to the ground.  The fire was so great, firefighters from Montreal were brought in the battle the flames in order to save the city.
